Films Seen the Last Month
Nov. 8th, 2001 05:13 am1. "Saving Private Ryan" (1998), Spielberg 10(10)
Great Tom Hanks. Great camera work. Unbelievable scenes, although sometimes too masterfully shot to be true. One of the best films about war I have seen. A "Must see" even for haters of the war movies and of Hollywood.
2. "The Bonfire of the Vanities" (1990) Brian De Palma 6.5(10)
Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith. Amazingly politically INcorrect movie. Entertainment. Quite Watchable.
3. "SimÑn del desierto" (1965) Luis Bunuel 7.0(10)
Black-White. Very short (45-min). Interesting. Anti-clerical. Weaker than "Milky Way". Last 5 minutes -- "pigs tail". Worth seeing once.
4. "Tristana" (1970) Luis Bunuel 4.5(10)
Weak shade of "That Obscure Object of Desire", good play of Fernando Rey. Terrible scenario not saved by Catherine Deneuve. Barely watchable.
5. "East-West" (1999) RÈgis Wargnier 7.9(10)
Good play of Oleg Menshikov, Sandrine Bonnaire, and all others. Impressive, depressive. Strongly Anti-soviet. Portrait of a monstrous regime, hard to believe but sadly very true. Worth seeing.
6. "Proryv" (1986) Svetozarov 6.5(10)
Oleg Borisov, Andrei Rostotsky, etc. Nostalgic.
7. "Klassic" (199?) 6.0(10)
New Russian gangster cheat movie. Resembles "The Sting" and others in the same genre. Entertainment. Almost watchable.
8. "North by Northwest", (1959) Alfred Hitchcock 6.8(10)
Spy chase movie. Cary Grant is great. Far cry from the "Charade". Entertainment. Quite Watchable, once.
9. "Captain Blood" (1935) Michael Curtiz 8.0(10)
Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland etc. great play. Great old black-white movie.
10. "Afterlife" (1998) Hirokazu Koreeda 7.9(10)
Thought-provoking. Serious. Great play of non-prof. actors. Would benefit from being 20 minutes shorter (middle). Worth trying.
11. "Zelig" (1983) Woody Allen 6.4(10)
Primitive parody. Too obvious. Almost Watchable.
12. "Matrix" (1999) Larry&Andy Wachowski 7.9(10)
Hollywood action with a computer twist. Sometimes primitive, sometimes interresting. Action sequences very well done. Keanu Reeves. Worth.
13. "Monolog" (1972) Ilya Averbakh 7.2(10)
Gluzsky, Terehova, Lubshin, Neelova. Unusual. Almost as surreal as real life. Worth seeing.
14. "Being John Malkovich" (1999) Spike Jonze 5.5(10)
A film of rare idiocity, however hard to stop watching. Surreal. Beware.
