North Borneo dispute
Mar. 15th, 2014 12:17 amNorth Borneo was a British protectorate under the sovereign North Borneo Chartered Company from 1882 to 1941.
From 1946[1] to 1963, North Borneo was a Crown Colony of Great Britain, known in this time as British North Borneo. The North Borneo dispute refers to the territorial dispute between Malaysia and the Republic of the Philippines over much of the eastern part of Sabah. Sabah was known as North Borneo prior to the formation of the Malaysian federation. The Philippines broke diplomatic relations with Malaysia after the federation had included Sabah in 1963. Diplomatic ties were resumed in 1989 because succeeding Philippine administrations have placed the claim in the back burner in the interest of pursuing cordial economic and security relations with Kuala Lumpur.
